In
the year of 1976, the Rehoboth Church of God in Christ was started
on Roosevelt Street, in the city of Clarksdale, by the Elder David
Taylor. Later it was moved to a location on Fifth Street, and
then established at 739 Florida Street on the 4th day of February
1981. The word "Rehoboth" was taken from the book of
Genesis, the 26th chapter and the 22nd verse, and it reads: "And
he removed from thence, digged another well; and for that they
strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth: and he said,
'For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful
in the land.'"
Elder
Taylor remained in pastorship at Rehoboth until the 30th day of
January, 1983, at which time Elder Jimmy Lee Pate was appointed
pastor. During Elder Pate's pastorage, a new building was constructed
and the church was renamed - New Rehoboth Church of God in Christ,
meaning the Lord has made MORE
room for us. After the demise of Elder Pate in 1997, Bishop
T.T. Scott appointed Elder L.B. Howard on Sunday, October 10,
1997 as Pastor of New Rehoboth.
Elder
Howard continues the progress of New Rehoboth by: purchasing the
property next door, purchasing 2 vans for children and those who
don't have rides, Sunday breakfast for children, and annual events
such as the Couples Nite Out (Keeping the 'I Do' Alive).
God
gave Elder Howard a vision to help with the family and work with
the children and youth in the church and community. He has a passion
for souls and for making sure the Word of God gets out through
Rehoboth's Harvest Time Broadcast (KJIW 94.5fm). New Rehoboth's
motto is "God's Will For
You Is Victory".
